Review of the evening by Steve Borley

6pm for 6.30pm start on Monday 7th November 2005 at The Radisson, 80 High Street (Royal Mile), Edinburgh (how to get there)

The information worker has become a key intermediary in the war against information overload. And, boy, are end-users grateful? Well, they should be. But haven't we substituted their information overload for our own? Are we now wading through a swamp of irrelevance to uncover the hidden gems on their behalf? Yes, but here comes the cavalry...

Professor Ewan Klein of the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics will be talking to the Scottish Information Network about his pioneering work to develop advanced text mining technologies. Prof. Klein is developing his work in the field of life sciences, but this Scottish-based research promises to be applicable across all research disciplines.

Also speaking will be Chris Shaw, Global Practice Director, Factiva Insight. Chris serves as the global practice director for Factiva Insight, where his responsibilities include business development, client strategy and product development.

Chris has 15 years in international marketing and business strategy. Prior to co-founding 2B in 2002, Chris was a lead consultant with Answerthink, where worked with Hackett Benchmarking to develop and conduct benchmarks to measure CRM strategies. In 1997 Chris was appointed senior e-business consultant at Omnicom agency Think New Ideas Inc. where he lead e-marketing and e-business projects in Europe for such clients as Du Pont, ABN Amro, IBM, and NCR.

Before turning to consulting in 1997, Chris was with Lloyds of London Press where he developed the online strategy for Lloyds List, the world's oldest paper.

The event is being made possible by the generous sponsorship of Factiva. Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company, provides essential business news and information together with the content delivery tools and services that enable professionals to make better decisions faster.
